# Mystery Shopping in India: What It Measures, How It Is Priced, and When a Customer Survey Is the Better Tool

Mystery shopping in India: what audits measure, how to design scenarios and scoring sheets, how providers price visits, and when a customer survey fits better.

Mystery shopping sends a trained, briefed shopper into a store, branch or call centre to check whether staff followed the process: the greeting, the script, the offer, the store standards. It measures compliance on the day of the visit. It does not tell you what your real customers think. For perception, survey recent customers. Hercules Works runs verified consumer surveys in India and does not run mystery shopping visits, so this guide says plainly when each method fits.

## Compliance Is Not the Same as Satisfaction

Searches for "mystery shopping India" come from two needs. Some readers run a chain of stores, branches or dealerships and want to know whether staff follow the process. Others want to know whether customers are happy. These are different questions and need different methods.

We run consumer surveys, not mystery shopping visits, so the closing section covers the survey side only.

## What a Mystery Shopping Audit Measures

Start with the UK Market Research Society's definition. Mystery shopping is "the use of individuals trained to experience and measure any customer service process, by acting as potential customers and in some way reporting back on their experiences in a detailed and objective way" ([MRS, October 2011](https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2013-01-14%20Mystery%20Shopping%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf)). The staff member does not know the visit is a test. A known test produces best behaviour, not normal behaviour.

ESOMAR's guideline lists what a visit can observe: "signage, cleanliness, waiting time, response time, commercial signage, the state of equipment in use, adherence to the company's standards" ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)). The shopper can also make a purchase or an enquiry under a scenario.

| Area | Typical checks | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Service compliance | Greeted within a set time, name badge worn, help offered | Pass or fail per item |
| Script adherence | Disclosures read, needs questions asked, cross-sell offered | Pass or fail, plus a note |
| Store standards | Shelf fill, price tags, cleanliness, trial room, queue | Pass or fail, photo where allowed |
| Transaction accuracy | Bill matches the tag, receipt issued | Pass or fail, with receipt |

Every item is yes or no, or a short scale, and the sheet is the same at every outlet. That makes scores comparable. It is also the limit. A shopper scores one visit. The score says nothing about the real customers who walked in that week.

## Compliance, Perception or Benchmark: Pick the Method First

Write down your question before you call a provider, then find it in this table.

| Your question | Measuring | Method | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Did staff follow the process on the day? | Compliance | Mystery shopping audit | One observer, one fixed checklist, outlet by outlet |
| Are customers satisfied, and why? | Perception | Survey of recent customers | Many real customers, in their own words |
| How do we compare with the competitor next door? | Benchmark | Mystery shop both, within the limits below, or survey people who shopped at both | A survey can rate both chains without entering either |
| Is the new sales script being used? | Compliance | Mystery shopping audit | Only an observer can hear the script |
| Did the new script improve the experience? | Perception | Survey before and after rollout | Customers judge the outcome, not the script |
| Are shelf prices correct? | Compliance | Store audit, often bundled with mystery shopping | A fact that needs a photo, not an opinion |

The two methods often disagree, and that is useful. A store can score high on compliance and low on satisfaction because the process itself annoys customers. The compliance data tells you what staff did. The survey tells you how it landed. Our [retail consumer research guide](/blogs/retail-consumer-research-india) covers catchment and shopper surveys.

## How a Mystery Shopper Programme Is Designed

A programme has four parts: scenario, shopper brief, scoring sheet and visit plan. Build them in that order.

**Scenario.** Decide what the shopper does: observe and leave, ask a question, buy, attempt a return or complain. MRS says the scenario "must be designed to test the specific sales or service behaviour that is the topic of study" ([MRS](https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2013-01-14%20Mystery%20Shopping%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf)). ESOMAR says time with staff "should be kept as short as possible" and should not waste staff resources beyond a normal customer enquiry ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)).

**Shopper brief.** Tell the shopper who they are, what they want, what to say if asked and what to note. Match the shopper to the scenario: a two-wheeler loan enquiry needs a shopper who could plausibly take a loan. An Indian guide to mystery audit pricing notes that a narrow shopper profile, such as a specific age group or language, "costs more and schedules more slowly" ([Patron Accounting](https://www.patronaccounting.com/blog/mystery-audit-cost-in-india)).

**Scoring sheet.** Make most items yes or no. Use a short scale only where judgement is unavoidable, such as courtesy. Ask for evidence on items staff dispute: a receipt, a photo, the time of the greeting.

**Visit plan.** Set visits per outlet per cycle, usually monthly or quarterly. One visit gives a rough read. The same Indian guide says halving the uncertainty of a score takes "about four times the visits" ([Patron Accounting](https://www.patronaccounting.com/blog/mystery-audit-cost-in-india)). Rotate shoppers so the same face does not return to one store.

**Tell your staff.** For your own organisation, ESOMAR requires that "the client must have notified the staff concerned previously" ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)). Staff need to know that visits will happen in a future period, what they cover, whether individuals will be identified and whether recording is used. MRS says notice can go in contracts, handbooks or newsletters, without the date ([MRS](https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2013-01-14%20Mystery%20Shopping%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf)).

**What we would do.** We would write the scoring sheet before the scenario, because the sheet shows what a shopper can observe at all. You then pick the scenario that exposes most of those items. Add visits per outlet only once you have seen how far scores move between shoppers.

## Sample Scoring Sheet for a Retail Visit

A starting point for an apparel or electronics store. Weights add to 100. Evidence is what the shopper must attach for the item to count.

| Section | Item | Score | Weight | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Greeted within 30 seconds | Yes / No | 8 | Time noted |
| Entry | Store front clean, lights on | Yes / No | 5 | Photo from outside |
| Needs | Staff asked what you were looking for | Yes / No | 10 | Note |
| Needs | Staff asked a follow-up question (size, budget, use) | Yes / No | 10 | Note |
| Product | Staff showed at least two options | Yes / No | 8 | Note |
| Product | Staff explained a feature unprompted | Yes / No | 7 | Note |
| Script | Current offer mentioned | Yes / No | 8 | Note |
| Script | Loyalty programme or app offered | Yes / No | 7 | Note |
| Standards | Price tags on all five items checked | 0 to 5 | 10 | Photo |
| Standards | Trial room or demo unit clean and working | Yes / No | 7 | Photo where permitted |
| Billing | Bill matched the tag, receipt issued | Yes / No | 10 | Receipt |
| Courtesy | Overall manner of staff | 1 to 5 | 10 | Comment, two lines |

Write items as observable facts, not impressions: "greeted within 30 seconds" beats "welcoming atmosphere". Keep the free-text comment, because that is where you learn why an item failed. Agree the sheet with the operations head before the first visit.

Report at outlet or region level. MRS says results should be used "more for directing training and for rewards schemes rather than for disciplinary purposes" ([MRS](https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2013-01-14%20Mystery%20Shopping%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf)).

## How Mystery Shopping Companies Price It

Providers price per visit, then add set-up, reporting and any purchase. The Indian guide puts it in one line: "The fee is the number of visits multiplied by the cost of each visit". It adds that "the cost of a visit rises with distance, scenario complexity and the evidence required" ([Patron Accounting](https://www.patronaccounting.com/blog/mystery-audit-cost-in-india)). It gives no rupee figures, and we found no published Indian rate card. Ask each provider for one.

Two international providers publish list prices, which show the shape of the model:

- Secret View, a European platform, lists mystery shopping from €29.99 per visit for 1 to 5 locations and from €27.50 per visit for 6 or more. A visit is one assignment, and shop credit for any purchase is charged on top ([Secret View pricing](https://www.secretview.io/en/pricing), [FAQ](https://secretview.io/en/resources/faq)).
- Market Force, a US provider, lists its self-serve CX Express shops at $59 per shop, or $50.15 with a 12-month prepay, excluding shopper reimbursement ([Market Force](https://marketforce.com/cx-express-mystery-shopping)).

What the per-visit price covers varies, so compare quotes on the same basis. Ask what is included, whether purchases are reimbursed at cost and what a repeated visit costs. Then ask how prices change in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. There, the Indian guide says, a thin shopper pool and longer distances push up the cost ([Patron Accounting](https://www.patronaccounting.com/blog/mystery-audit-cost-in-india)). Fix the visit frequency before you ask for prices; for a chain it drives the total more than the per-visit rate.

## Industry Bodies and the Rules They Set

**MSPA Asia Pacific.** The Mystery Shopping Professionals Association runs regional chapters. The Asia Pacific chapter's site calls itself "dedicated to delivering high quality mystery shopping services throughout Asia Pacific" ([MSPA Asia Pacific](https://www.mspa-ap.org/)). It says the association's membership is over 400 companies across chapters in Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe and Africa ([About us](https://www.mspa-ap.org/about-us.html)). Full membership requires at least two years trading as a mystery shopping provider with headquarters in the Asia Pacific region. Applicants also need proof of business existence, three client references and agreement to the MSPA Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Standards. The annual fee is listed as US$400 ([membership criteria](https://www.mspa-ap.org/membership-criteria.html)). Member companies are not allowed to charge shoppers any fees ([Ethics and Standards](https://www.mspa-ap.org/ethics-and-standards.html)). Use membership as a filter when you shortlist mystery shopping companies in India. These are the association's own statements, not an audit of quality.

**ESOMAR.** Its Mystery Shopping Studies guideline, last revised in 2005, says findings must not "be used for the purposes of disciplining or otherwise disadvantaging individuals involved in the study". Scenarios must not put shoppers at physical risk. Studies must "always conform to applicable data protection legislation" ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)). It separates mystery shopping research, where individuals stay anonymous, from a mystery shopping project, where data may feed training or a bonus system. Ask your provider which one you are buying.

**Competitor visits.** Both bodies allow them, with limits. ESOMAR says demands on competitors must be "reasonable and kept to a minimum level" ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)). MRS says competitors' employees cannot be warned, so they must not be identified or recorded, and data "must be reported at an aggregated level" ([MRS](https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2013-01-14%20Mystery%20Shopping%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf)). For a competitor benchmark with more depth, survey people who shop at both chains instead.

## Choosing Among Mystery Shopping Companies in India

We do not list providers here. We have not audited any, and a list goes stale. Use these checks instead.

1. Which association code do you follow, and can we see the agreement you sign each year?
2. How are shoppers recruited, trained and matched to a scenario, and how many are active in our cities?
3. What share of reports fail your validation, and what happens to the visit when they do?
4. Will we see raw item-level data, or only a dashboard score?
5. How are staff names and photos stored, who sees them, and when are they deleted?
6. What is the total price for our outlet list, scenario and frequency, including purchases and repeat visits?

Run a one-cycle pilot in ten outlets before you sign an annual contract. Read every free-text comment yourself. Specific comments name the item, the aisle and the words staff used. Then run a short customer survey in the same ten catchments and see whether the two reads agree. Our [customer experience survey guide](/blogs/customer-experience-survey-india) shows which metric to use.

## Running This Study on Hercules

If your job is the perception side of this study, a survey of recent customers of your stores or your competitors' stores among a defined Indian audience, this is the pilot and main study at list price, with respondents included. We do not run mystery shopping visits.

| Step | Plan | Responses | Price per response | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test the questionnaire | Free | 30 | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Small pilot | Plus | 100 | ₹150 | ₹15,000 |
| Main study | Pro | 400 | ₹120 | ₹48,000 |

Pro is sold in bundles of 400 to 1,000 responses and costs 20% less per response than Plus. Enterprise plans come with a dedicated research team and are priced on request.

The SuperJ network has 2 crore Indian respondents. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read [/panel-methodology](/panel-methodology) and [pricing](/pricing).

The limit: the app reaches smartphone users only, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork. For compliance checks on the shop floor, you still need a mystery shopping provider.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is mystery shopping?

A trained shopper visits a store, branch, website or call centre as a normal customer, follows a set scenario and scores the visit against a fixed checklist. Staff do not know the visit is a test. The output is a compliance score per outlet, usually with photos, a receipt and a short comment.

### What is the difference between a mystery shopping audit and a customer satisfaction survey?

An audit records what one trained observer saw on one visit: was the script followed, were standards met. A survey records what many real customers felt and why. Use the audit to check the process and the survey to check the outcome.

### How much does mystery shopping cost in India?

Providers price per visit and add set-up, reporting and any purchase. We found no published Indian rate card. An Indian guide says the per-visit cost rises with distance, scenario complexity and evidence required ([Patron Accounting](https://www.patronaccounting.com/blog/mystery-audit-cost-in-india)). Fix your outlet list, scenario and frequency, then ask three providers for a line-by-line quote.

### Do I have to tell staff about a mystery shopper programme?

For your own organisation, yes, in general terms. ESOMAR's guideline says the client must have notified the staff concerned beforehand that visits will take place, what they cover and whether recording is used ([ESOMAR, 2005](https://ana.esomar.org/api/public/document/file_renderer/6672)). You need not give the date. Both ESOMAR and MRS say results should not be used to discipline individuals.

### Does our platform run mystery shopping?

No. We run surveys among verified Indian consumers, including recent customers of your stores or your competitors' stores, targeted by city, age band, gender and NCCS with a screener. For shop-floor compliance checks you need a mystery shopping provider. Many brands run both and compare the two reads.
