Consumer Insights Platform in India: What It Is and How to Evaluate One

What a consumer insights platform is, the four kinds sold in India, what to evaluate and the questions to ask vendors before you buy one. No vendor ranking.

In shortA consumer insights platform gives you access to consumers, tools to ask them questions, analysis of the answers and a place to keep results. Products sold under the name include different parts of that list. Judge any of them on who answers and how they are verified, coverage of India including languages and offline households, quality checks, analysis you can audit, data protection and pricing model. Hercules Works is one such platform, built on an Indian consumer panel.

A Working Definition

A note on bias: Hercules Works, the author of this guide, sells a consumer insights platform. This page explains the category and does not rank vendors. Our own product appears only in the last section.

A consumer insights platform helps a brand learn what consumers think and do, and why. Most combine some of these five parts:

  1. Respondents: a panel or another way to reach consumers.
  2. Collection: surveys, interviews or tests.
  3. Quality control: checks that remove careless or fake responses.
  4. Analysis: cross-tabs, significance tests and coding of open answers, often with AI.
  5. Storage and sharing: a place where past studies can be found and reused.

Vendors use the same label for products with two of these parts and for products with all five. Your first job is to find out which parts you are buying.

Social listening tools are sometimes sold as insights platforms too. They show what people post in public, not what a defined sample thinks.

If you are already comparing named products, our Qualtrics competitors guide, SurveyMonkey comparison and Medallia alternative guide go vendor by vendor. For firms rather than software, see consumer research companies in India.

What to Evaluate, in Order

Work down this list in order. The order is our own: weak sampling cannot be repaired by better analysis later.

  1. Who answers. How people join the panel, how identity is checked, and how often each member takes surveys. If the vendor has answered ESOMAR's questions for buyers of online samples, read its answers; SurveyMonkey's ESOMAR 37 page shows the format.
  2. Coverage of India. Which languages, which city tiers and which NCCS groups the panel reaches in practice. App and online panels reach people with smartphones and data. Ask how the vendor covers households without them, or accept that your results describe connected consumers.
  3. Quality control. Which checks run, whether removed responses are reported to you, and whether they are replaced.
  4. Analysis you can audit. Every chart should show its base size. Significance tests should be named. Every theme should link back to the answers behind it.
  5. Data protection. Where data is stored and who at the vendor can see it. India's DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025 and phase in over 18 months (PIB); check with your counsel which duties already bind you. This is not legal advice.
  6. Pricing model. Per seat, per response, per project or an annual licence. See the table further down.
  7. Reuse. Whether past studies can be searched, and who in your company can see them.

For Product and Design Teams

A platform chosen by the brand team may not suit product and design work. Check four things a brand team might not ask about:

  • Stimuli. Can respondents see a screen, a prototype image or a short clip, and on what device?
  • Minimum order. Can you buy a small sample for a quick read, or only large studies?
  • Screening on behaviour. Can you reach, say, people who ordered groceries on an app in the past month, not only an age band?
  • Full open answers. Can designers read every comment, not only a theme summary?

For methods, see our guides to usability testing surveys and concept testing.

"Insight Engine" and Other AI Labels

Some vendors call their analysis layer an insight engine, an AI analyst or an AI research platform. The label does not tell you what it does. Ask for a live run on one of your past datasets:

  1. Pick a finding it produces and ask for the table and base size behind it.
  2. Pick a theme and ask for the raw answers grouped under it.
  3. Ask which significance test it ran on a reported difference.
  4. Ask the same question twice and see whether the answer changes.

Our guide to AI market research tools covers the checks for each AI step in a project.

A Question Bank for Vendor Calls

Send these before the demo, so the call is spent on evidence rather than slides.

AreaQuestionA useful answer includes
PanelHow do people join, and what do they get for taking part?Recruitment channels and the incentive
PanelHow is each member's identity checked, and how often? The method and when it happens
PanelCan one person hold two accounts? How duplicates are blocked
CoverageHow many completes can you deliver for my quotas?A feasibility count for your cities and groups
CoverageWhich languages can respondents answer in?A named list, not a count
CoverageWho is missing from your panel? An honest gap, such as offline households
QualityWhich responses do you remove, and do I see how many?Named checks and a removal count per study
AnalysisWhich significance test do you use, at what confidence level?A named test and level
AnalysisHow are open-ended answers coded, and in which languages?Method, languages and a way to see raw answers
DataWhere is my data stored, and is it used to train AI models?A location and a yes or no
DataWhat do I receive about each respondent?Answers and profile fields, without identity
PriceWhat would last year's studies have cost me?A quote on your real volumes

A Scorecard for Comparing Platforms

Set the weights before you see any demo, so that the scorecard reflects your needs rather than the best presentation.

CriterionWeight (yours, total 100)Vendor A (1 to 5)Vendor B (1 to 5)Evidence you saw
Respondent verification
Coverage for your quotas
Languages you need
Quality checks and reporting
Analysis you can audit
Data protection
Cost of one real year of studies
Reuse and sharing

Score only what you have seen in a demo, a document or a pilot. Then field the same short questionnaire with your top two and compare the results side by side.

How Platforms Charge

ModelYou pay forWatch for
Per seatEach user, monthly or yearlyRespondents bought separately
Per responseEach completed responseBundle minimums, and the cost of hard-to-fill quotas
Per projectA quoted studyWhat counts as a change request
Annual licenceA year of access and a usage allowanceAllowance you pay for and do not use

Take the studies your team ran in the past twelve months and price them, sample included, under each vendor's model. The model that looks cheapest on a sales slide may not be the cheapest for your mix of studies.

Costing This Study on Hercules

Measured against the five parts at the top, our platform has four. It has an Indian consumer panel, surveys and automated checks that flag rushed, patterned or inconsistent answers. Analysis covers cross-tabs, significance tests and coded open-ended answers. Our methodology page does not describe a study library, so ask about reuse if that part matters to you (panel methodology).

To test your scorecard's top rows on your own questionnaire, run 30 responses free, then a 150-response pilot on Plus: 150 × ₹150 = ₹22,500 (plan details). Panel members are verified once through Aadhaar-based KYC. Because the panel runs through an app, offline households sit outside it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a consumer insights platform?

Software, often with a panel attached, that helps a brand find out what consumers think and why. It may include respondents, survey or interview tools, quality checks, analysis and a store of past studies. Products sold under the name include different mixes of these.

How is a consumer insights platform different from a survey tool?

A survey tool collects answers from people you send it to. An insights platform usually adds respondents you could not reach yourself, quality control and deeper analysis. Ask which parts each product includes.

How much does a consumer insights platform cost in India?

It depends on the pricing model: per seat, per response, per project or an annual licence. Price your last twelve months of studies under each vendor's model, sample included, before you compare.

Is there a free consumer research platform?

Several survey tools have free plans for surveys you send to your own contacts, such as SurveyMonkey Basic. On our platform, the free plan includes 30 panel responses for a trial run.

How do platforms keep out fake or bot responses?

Ask each vendor how members are verified when they join, how duplicate accounts are blocked, and which checks remove careless answers. Ask too whether you see how many responses were removed from your study.

Do I still need a research agency?

If nobody in your team designs studies or reads data, an agency or an agency-run platform is safer. If you have that skill in-house, a self-serve platform lets you run more studies yourself.
