Best AI Survey Tools for 2025-2026: What the AI Does, and How to Test It
What seven AI survey tools actually automate, from question drafting to AI-moderated interviews, with dated prices and a one-afternoon test for Indian studies.
In shortThe best AI survey tool depends on which step you want automated. SurveyMonkey, QuestionPro, Typeform and Google Forms draft questionnaires from a prompt. Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey score open-ended answers for sentiment. Typeform Research Flow, QuestionPro ListenAI and Outset run AI-moderated interviews. For Indian consumer studies, also check who answers and which languages the AI handles; Hercules Works pairs AI analysis with an Indian consumer panel.

"AI Survey Tool" Means Five Different Jobs
Disclosure: Hercules Works publishes this guide and appears in the comparison. Feature descriptions and prices come from each vendor's own pages, read on 12 October 2026. Vendors change both often.
Almost every survey product now has an AI label. Underneath it, the AI does one or more of five jobs:
- Drafting: turns a prompt into a questionnaire.
- Translation: renders the questionnaire in other languages.
- Analysis: codes open-ended answers into themes and scores sentiment.
- Moderation: asks follow-up questions in a conversation, by text, voice or video.
- Synthetic respondents: a model generates answers instead of people.
Decide which job you need before you compare logos. A tool that drafts well may analyse poorly, and none of the five jobs supplies real respondents on its own.

Two limits from the vendors' own pages are worth knowing. Google says its Forms feature is "rolling out gradually", works on desktop and does not yet create forms with multiple sections (Google). Qualtrics says sentiment analysis "is only available to Advanced Text clients" (Qualtrics).
Conversational and AI-Moderated Survey Platforms
An AI-moderated study sits between a survey and an interview. The AI asks a question, reads the answer, and decides whether to probe further. QuestionPro says ListenAI asks "a contextual follow-up" when an answer is "short, unclear, or especially revealing" (QuestionPro). Typeform says Research Flow surfaces "themes, sentiment, quotes, and video clips" automatically (Typeform).
Before you buy one, ask four things:
- Who are the participants? Your own customers, the vendor's recruits, or a partner panel? Ask how many in India.
- Which languages, really? Ask for a sample transcript in Hindi or your regional language, not a list of language names.
- Can you read every transcript? Summaries are useful only if you can check them against what people said.
- How are follow-ups chosen? You should be able to cap the number of probes and block topics.
AI Sentiment Analysis vs Traditional Tools Like Qualtrics
The contrast is less sharp than it sounds, because Qualtrics itself does AI sentiment. Its Text iQ labels each answer from "Very Negative" to "Very positive" or "Mixed". Qualtrics lists the languages its sentiment model is optimised for, and no Indian language is on that list. It adds that the model "can make sentiment predictions for all languages, but cannot guarantee the same level of quality" (Qualtrics).
So for Indian verbatims the question is not AI versus no AI. It is how well a given model reads Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil or Bengali answers. Test it:
- Take 50 real open-ended answers from a past study, in the languages you use.
- Have a native speaker label each one positive, neutral or negative.
- Run the same 50 through each tool.
- Count how often the tool agrees with the person, and read every disagreement.
Read the disagreements before you look at the agreement rate. Start with sarcasm, mixed-script answers and short replies such as "theek hai", since people label them differently.
Multilingual Question Generation and Translation
Several tools now translate as they draft. Typeform says its AI "translates forms as you build" (Typeform AI). QuestionPro says ListenAI runs "one study across multiple languages from a single setup" (QuestionPro). Google links its Forms feature to a list of supported Gemini languages (Google).
A machine translation is a first draft. For Indian fieldwork, add three steps before launch:
- Back-translate. A second person translates the questionnaire back to English without seeing the original. Compare the two.
- Check register. Ask a native speaker whether the wording sounds like everyday speech in the target region rather than a formal document.
- Keep brand and product names as printed on the pack, unless your pilot shows respondents call the product something else.
A One-Afternoon Test for Any AI Survey Tool
Run every shortlisted tool through the same five tests with the same brief. Score each 0 (fails), 1 (partly) or 2 (passes). The tests and scoring are our own; adapt them.
| Test | What to do | What a pass looks like | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draft | Paste a one-paragraph brief: "Why are buyers in Tier 2 cities switching from our ₹10 shampoo sachet?" | Neutral wording, a screener, no double-barrelled questions | |
| Leading questions | Look for loaded wording in the draft | You find none, or the tool flags them | |
| Translation | Ask for Hindi and one regional language | A native speaker calls it natural | |
| Coding | Upload 50 past open-ended answers | Themes match a human's, with raw answers visible under each | |
| Audit trail | Trace one chart back to its data | Every number traces to a table and a base size |
Leading-question examples to look for in an AI draft:
| AI draft | Better |
|---|---|
| How much do you love our new flavour? | How would you rate the taste of this flavour, from 1 to 5? |
| Don't you agree the price is fair for the quality? | Is the price too high, about right or too low for what you get? |
| How often do you use our app and our website? | Ask about the app and the website in two separate questions |
A tool that scores well but has no respondents still needs a panel. Score that separately.
AI Survey Tools vs Traditional Survey Tools
| Step | What AI changes | What still needs a person |
|---|---|---|
| Questionnaire | First draft in minutes | Checking wording, order and screeners |
| Translation | Instant draft in many languages | Back-translation and a native-speaker read |
| Fieldwork | Little: people still have to answer | Choosing and checking the sample |
| Cleaning | Flags rushed or gibberish answers | Deciding the removal rules |
| Open-ended coding | Themes across thousands of answers | Reading samples under each theme |
| Reporting | Draft summaries and charts | Separating findings from opinion |
The ICC/ESOMAR Code says the client "must be informed when AI or other emerging technologies are to be used" in datasets, analysis, reporting or interpretation, including synthetic data, and "the extent of human oversight must be stated" (Article 7(e), ICC/ESOMAR Code 2025). Ask any vendor or agency for that statement.
On synthetic respondents, Qualtrics itself recommends "combining synthetic testing with human panel validation" for high-stakes decisions (Qualtrics). Treat synthetic answers as hypotheses to test on people.
When Hercules Works Is Not the Right Choice
You need AI-moderated video interviews. Our platform runs structured surveys. For conversational depth, look at the AI-moderated tools in the table.
Your respondents are your own customers or staff. You do not need a panel. A survey tool with good AI drafting, such as SurveyMonkey or Google Forms, will cost less.
You want synthetic respondents. We field surveys to people. If you want model-generated answers for early ideas, Qualtrics says it offers them.
Your study spans many countries. Our panel covers India only.
Running This Study on Hercules
The coding test in the score sheet works best on fresh answers rather than an old file. On our platform, 100 new open-ended answers from Indian consumers cost 100 × ₹150 = ₹15,000 on the Plus plan, and the drafting and translation checks fit inside the Free plan's 30 responses (pricing).
What you then score: our analysis engine returns coded open-ended answers, cross-tabs and significance tests, which you can compare with a human coder's labels. The questionnaire can run in as many Indian languages as the study needs, so the coding test covers the languages you actually field in. Rushed, straight-lined and self-contradicting responses are removed before coding, which keeps junk out of the themes (panel methodology).
Frequently asked questions
What are the top AI survey tools in 2026?
For drafting: SurveyMonkey, QuestionPro, Typeform and Google Forms. For sentiment on open-ended answers: Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey. For AI-moderated interviews: Typeform Research Flow, QuestionPro ListenAI and Outset. For Indian consumer surveys with a panel: our platform. Test them on your own brief.
Can AI write a good questionnaire?
It can write a fast first draft. It can also write leading or double-barrelled questions, so a researcher should check every line, the screener and the question order before launch.
Which AI survey tools handle Indian languages?
Ask each vendor for a sample in your language and have a native speaker review it. Qualtrics, for example, lists no Indian language among those its sentiment model is optimised for. We run surveys in as many Indian languages as the study needs.
Are synthetic respondents a replacement for real ones?
No. Even Qualtrics, which sells them, recommends checking high-stakes decisions with human panels. Use synthetic answers to generate ideas, then test those ideas on people.
Do I have to tell clients that I used AI?
Under Article 7(e) of the ICC/ESOMAR Code 2025, the client must be told when AI is used in datasets, analysis, reporting or interpretation, and the extent of human oversight must be stated.
What should I look for when comparing AI survey platforms for enterprise research?
Who the respondents are, which languages the AI handles well, whether every summary traces back to data, how AI use is disclosed, and published or quoted prices. Run the five-test sheet above on each shortlisted tool.
