Survey Respondents for Academic Research in India: A Guide for Students and Scholars
Find survey respondents for a thesis or research paper in India: sample design, ethics and consent, a questionnaire checklist, limits to report and a budget.
In shortFor academic research, define the population and sampling method before you collect, get ethics approval where your institution requires it, write a consent note and report the limits of your sample. A panel reaches defined adults in the cities you target; snowball and campus samples are cheaper but reach people like you. Hercules Works offers a free plan with 30 responses, then paid plans per response, and keeps respondents anonymous to researchers.

Data Collection Is the Part Examiners Question First
Examiners and reviewers look at how you found your respondents before they look at your results. A neat analysis of a convenience sample from your friends will be marked down. A modest sample with a clear method and honest limits is stronger.
This guide covers sampling choices, ethics, a questionnaire checklist and a budget. It makes no claims about acceptance by any institution. Check your own rules.
Choose a Sampling Route and State Its Limits
| Route | Cost | Who you reach | Limit to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friends, class and social media | Free | People like you | Convenience sample; not generalisable |
| Snowball | Free | Networks of your contacts | Clusters; hard to reach rare groups, see snowball sampling |
| Institution list or email | Low | Everyone on the list who replies | Non-response bias |
| Online consumer panel | Per response | Defined adults in chosen cities and age bands | Smartphone users only; not a probability sample |
| Probability sample | High | A designed sample of the population | Needs a sampling frame |
Match the route to the claim. If you claim something about all Indian adults, you need a probability sample. If you compare groups in a defined audience, a targeted panel with quotas can do the job, as long as you say so.
Ethics, Consent and Data
- Get approval from your ethics committee where required.
- Tell respondents the purpose, who you are, that taking part is voluntary and that they can stop.
- Collect only what you need. Avoid names, phone numbers and IDs.
- Follow the ICC/ESOMAR Code on voluntary participation and privacy, and see the PRS summary of the DPDP Bill on personal data.
- Under-18 respondents need parental consent.
Our panel keeps respondents anonymous to researchers and never collects religion, caste or sexuality.
A Questionnaire Checklist for Theses
- Each question maps to a research question or hypothesis.
- Scales come from published instruments where they exist, with the source cited.
- One idea per question, neutral wording, balanced scales. See questionnaire design.
- A pilot with a small group, and changes noted. See pilot survey.
- A consent note at the start.
- A sample size justified by the analysis you plan, not by convenience.
- A limitations paragraph that names the bias risks. See survey bias.

The SuperJ network has a 25M+ consumer footprint. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read /panel-methodology and pricing.
The limit: the app reaches smartphone users only, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find respondents for my thesis survey in India?
Choose a sampling route that fits your claim: your network for a pilot, snowball for hard-to-reach groups, an institution list, a targeted panel for defined adults, or a probability sample for population claims. State the limits.
Do I need ethics approval for a student survey?
Many institutions require it. Check your own rules, and in any case give a consent note, keep taking part voluntary and collect only what you need.
How many responses do I need for a thesis?
It depends on the analysis you plan. Justify the number from your method, not from convenience. For a share near 50%, 100 responses give about ±9.8 points and 400 give about ±4.9 points in a simple random sample.
Can I use a paid panel for academic research?
Often yes, if your institution allows it. Report that the sample came from an app-based panel of smartphone users and describe the targeting.
Is there a free option?
Our Free plan includes 30 responses, which suits testing a questionnaire. Larger studies are priced per response.
