Competitor Benchmarking Survey: How to Compare Brands Using Buyers' Answers

Benchmark competitors with a consumer survey: choose the metrics, sample each brand's users, ask the same questions, and read gaps without overclaiming.

In shortA competitor benchmarking survey asks recent buyers of each brand the same questions, so you can compare awareness, satisfaction, price perception and switching on equal terms. Sample users of each brand, quota the cells alike, ask identical wording and compare with significance tests. It shows how customers see each brand, not rivals' sales or plans. Our platform finds each brand's users with a screener on a verified Indian panel.

Benchmarking Needs the Same Questions for Every Brand

Competitor benchmarking from public data tells you what rivals do. A survey tells you how buyers see them. To make the comparison fair, every brand's users must answer the same questions, drawn the same way.

This guide covers metrics, sampling, a design table and what you can and cannot say. The metrics and cell sizes are illustrative.

Metrics You Can Benchmark

Sampling and Design

  • One cell per brand, made of recent buyers of that brand, found with a screener.
  • Same quotas in every cell: city, age band and gender.
  • Identical questions and order. Rotate brand order where respondents rate more than one.
  • Cell size. A cell of 100 gives about ±9.8 points near 50% and 400 gives about ±4.9 points in a simple random sample. Small brands may need many screened people to fill a cell, so ask for a feasibility count.
  • Compare with a significance test. See significance testing.

What a Benchmark Cannot Tell You

It shows customer perception at one time. It does not show rivals' revenue, margins or plans. Brands with few users are hard to sample. Brand users in a panel may differ from all users, so say how you found them. Use market intelligence sources for the rest.

The SuperJ network has a 25M+ consumer footprint. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read /panel-methodology and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a competitor benchmarking survey?

A survey that asks buyers of each brand the same questions so you can compare how customers see them.

How do I find customers of a competitor to survey?

Use a screener on recent purchase, from a list that includes other brands, in your target cities. Ask for a feasibility count for each brand.

How many responses per brand?

It depends on the difference you need to detect. A cell of 100 gives about ±9.8 points near 50% and 400 gives about ±4.9 points in a simple random sample.

Can a survey show competitors' sales?

No. It shows how buyers see each brand. Use other sources for sales and plans.

How often should I benchmark?

Repeat it on a regular rhythm with the same design so you can see change. See brand tracking.
