Toluna India Alternative: What Toluna Publishes, How It Is Bought, and When Another Panel Fits

Toluna in India for buyers: what its panel book and ESOMAR 37 answers state, how Toluna Start is bought, a panel-vetting checklist and when another option fits.

In shortToluna is a global online panel with a self-serve platform called Toluna Start. Its March 2025 panel book lists an India panel of about 54 lakh members, and its pages show no India price list, so you ask for a quote or a demo. Whether you need an alternative depends on the job: a multi-country study suits a global panel, a complex design suits an agency, and a quick Indian consumer survey with verified respondents suits a platform like Hercules Works.

Judge the Panel, Not the Logo

Who is writing: Hercules Works runs a competing survey platform in India, so read this as a vendor's view. Every statement about Toluna below comes from Toluna's own pages and documents, or from dated trade press. Each carries the date we read it, 2 November 2026. We have not bought sample from Toluna or audited its figures.

A "Toluna alternative" means different things. Some buyers want a cheaper quote. Some want a panel that is Indian from top to bottom. Others simply want a tool they can run themselves, without a demo first. Whichever you are, start with what Toluna states about itself and its India panel, then put every panel on your shortlist, ours included, through the same checks.

What Toluna Is, Per Its Own Pages

Toluna's home page, read on 2 November 2026, says its panel has "more than 81 million consumers" across "100+ countries" (Toluna). Its panel book, dated March 2025, puts the community at "79+ million Toluna Influencers in 70+ countries" (Toluna Panel Book 2025). Both are Toluna's own counts, published at different times.

The 79 million figure is not one panel. Toluna's answers to the ESOMAR 37 questions, dated August 2025, describe "sample-only access to Toluna Influencers, our global panel of over 43 million consumers". Added to that is a "private network of premium partners" made up of "traditional research panels, loyalty communities, media owners, and online and mobile app publishers". Together these give "access to over 79+ million consumers in 70+ markets" (Toluna ESOMAR 37, August 2025). So part of a Toluna sample may come from partner sources. Ask which part.

Toluna Start is the platform. Toluna's product page calls it "Toluna's end-to-end, AI-powered market research platform", offered "whether you prefer a self-service approach or end-to-end support" (Toluna Start, read 2 November 2026). The page gives two market counts, "70 markets" and "90+ markets", so confirm the current figure with Toluna.

Trade press reported on 24 October 2023 that Toluna promoted Dixit Chanana to managing director for India, including MetrixLab India, based in Gurugram (Daily Research News, 24 October 2023). On 3 June 2026 his role widened to India, Japan and Korea (MediaNews4U, 3 June 2026). At group level, founder Frederic Charles Petit is stepping back as CEO, with a successor to be named (Daily Research News, 8 October 2026).

What Toluna Publishes About Its India Panel

The India figures sit in the panel book, not on the website. Its APAC table lists India with a panel count of 5,445,420 members, about 54 lakh. It reports the India panel as 61% male and 39% female. By age, 38% are 18 to 24 and 31% are 25 to 34, so 69% are under 35. Only 5% are 55 or older. It also says 85% of Indian respondents participate via mobile (Panel Book 2025, APAC table). These are Toluna's figures as of March 2025, not audited by us.

Two points follow. The panel skews young and male, so set quotas on age and gender for a balanced read. It is mostly mobile, so keep the questionnaire short and test it on a phone. Both points apply to our app-based panel too.

On the respondent side, Toluna's India member site offers "english (india)" as its only language option and shows voucher logos including Amazon and Swiggy (Toluna India, read 2 November 2026). The member FAQ says a survey pays "between 15 and 50,000 points (depending on its length)" and that points "remain valid for 16 months". Members confirm their account by email link (Toluna FAQ, read 2 November 2026). It states no minimum redemption amount for India.

How Toluna Is Bought: Quote or Self-Serve

Toluna does not publish India prices. Neither its Toluna Start page nor its panel community page lists a price per complete, a subscription fee or a free trial. The Toluna Start page ends in a "Schedule a demo" form (Toluna Start, read 2 November 2026).

Two buying routes appear on its pages. The first is self-serve on Toluna Start, where you build the survey and target the panel yourself. Its ESOMAR 37 answers say the platform "provides all clients with the ability to automatically calculate feasibility". The inputs are the number of completes, demographics, survey length, quota structure, incidence rate and qualification criteria (Toluna ESOMAR 37). The second is serviced research, where Toluna's team runs the study and quotes a project price.

Either way you pay for completes, so the price depends on incidence and length. Before asking for a quote, write down your target, expected incidence, survey length in minutes and quotas. The same brief gets you a comparable quote from any panel, including ours.

Ask what happens when fieldwork runs short. Toluna's ESOMAR 37 answers say that if incidence is lower than expected it will "alert our clients" and may use "a third-party partner" to finish fieldwork. It adds that it is "fully transparent" when this happens (Toluna ESOMAR 37). Get that disclosure in writing, with the share of completes from each source.

What we would do. We would write a one-page brief with the target, the expected incidence, the length in minutes and the quotas. We would send it unchanged to Toluna, to one other global panel and to us. Then we would compare two written figures: the price per complete at that incidence, and the share of completes each supplier expects to take from partners. A supplier that will not put either figure in writing has answered your question already.

A Panel-Vetting Checklist for India

Send these eight checks to every panel you shortlist, including us. The last column records what Toluna's own documents say, so you know which questions you still have to ask.

Panel Options for an Indian Consumer Study

Four kinds of supplier can field a consumer survey in India. Toluna's facts come from the sources above; our row uses /panel-methodology.

The guide to consumer panels in India explains the panel types behind this table. The YouGov alternative guide covers the omnibus route, a fifth option for a few questions to all Indian adults.

If two rows fit, get both quotes on the same brief and compare the all-in price per complete, not the list price. Write the incidence assumption into each quote.

When Hercules Works Is Not the Right Choice

Do not choose our panel for a multi-country study. It is an Indian panel, and Toluna's pages describe fielding in 70 or more markets, so a global brand tracker belongs with Toluna or a similar supplier. Do not choose it for a national estimate of Indian adults either. Our panel is app-based and opt-in, so describe its results as the views of the people you targeted. Rural and offline households need face-to-face fieldwork through an agency, as our guide to market research companies in India sets out. For physician or other professional samples, ask every supplier, us included, for a feasibility count before you commit.

Running This Study on Hercules

If your job is a quick, targeted consumer survey in India and you were about to ask Toluna for a quote, this is the pilot and main study at list price, with respondents included.

StepPlanResponsesPrice per responseCost
Test the questionnaireFree30₹0₹0
Small pilotPlus100₹150₹15,000
Main studyPro400₹120₹48,000

Pro is sold in bundles of 400 to 1,000 responses and costs 20% less per response than Plus. Enterprise plans come with a dedicated research team and are priced on request.

The SuperJ network has 2 crore Indian respondents. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read /panel-methodology and pricing.

The limit: the app reaches smartphone users only, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork.

Frequently asked questions

Is Toluna available in India?

Yes. Toluna's March 2025 panel book lists an India panel of 5,445,420 members, and trade press reported a managing director for India based in Gurugram in October 2023. Its pages give no India price list, so you ask for a quote.

How much does Toluna Start cost in India?

Toluna does not publish Toluna Start prices on the pages we read on 2 November 2026. The product page ends in a demo form. Ask for a quote with your incidence, survey length and quotas, and treat prices on third-party listing sites as unverified.

Is Toluna's panel its own or blended?

Both. Its ESOMAR 37 answers from August 2025 describe its own Influencers panel of over 43 million members plus a vetted partner network, together reaching over 79 million consumers. Ask for the source split on your project.

What is the best Toluna alternative in India?

It depends on the job. For a multi-country study, another global panel. A national estimate needs a probability sample or an omnibus. For a quick, targeted Indian consumer survey with verified respondents, a self-serve Indian panel platform such as ours.

How does Toluna verify respondents?

Its ESOMAR 37 answers list unique email checks, contact-detail matching, CAPTCHA, device fingerprinting, geo-IP validation and a short behavioural pre-screen. The documents we read do not describe an identity-document check, so ask.

Does Toluna run surveys in Indian languages?

Its India member site offers English (India) as the only language option, and the documents we read do not list Indian survey languages. Ask Toluna how it fields in the language you need, and ask to see a fielded example.
