Brand Awareness Survey in India: Aided and Unaided Recall, Step by Step
Run a brand awareness survey in India: unaided before aided recall, decoy brands, the funnel after awareness, D2C sample maths and a question bank.
In shortAsk unaided recall first: name the brands in the category with no list. Then show a list, with decoy brands, for aided recognition. Follow the funnel to consideration, trial and regular use, and ask every question of category buyers in your target cities. Awareness for a young brand is low, so sample size matters: at 10% awareness, 400 responses give about ±2.9 points. Hercules Works runs these studies on a verified Indian panel.

Awareness Is a Funnel With Rules for Question Order
Brand awareness looks simple, but the order of the questions decides the answer. Show a list of brands first and everyone recognises something. Ask for brand names first and you measure what people actually bring to mind. The survey must keep the two apart.
This guide gives definitions, the question order that keeps them apart, a question bank, sample-size arithmetic for small D2C brands and a note on brand equity. The question bank and screener rules are illustrative.
The Awareness Measures and What Each Asks
| Measure | How it is asked | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Top of mind | The first brand named when the category is mentioned | Which brand leads in memory |
| Unaided awareness | Any brands named with no list shown | Brands people recall on their own |
| Aided awareness | Recognised from a list of brands | Whether the name rings a bell |
| Consideration | Would consider buying | Whether awareness turns into a short list |
| Trial and regular use | Ever bought; bought recently | Whether consideration turns into sales |
| Preference and advocacy | Brand first choice; would recommend | Strength of the relationship |
Report the funnel as a chain: of everyone surveyed, how many are unaided aware, how many of those consider, how many of those buy. A leak between two steps tells you where to act.
Keep Unaided Before Aided
- Unaided first. Ask "Which brands of [category] can you think of?" as an open text box. Code the answers afterwards. Spelling variants and sub-brands need a coding list.
- Aided second. Show a list that mixes your brand, competitors and one or two decoys. A decoy is a brand that does not exist. People who tick it are guessing, so you can estimate and remove false recognition.
- Screen first. Ask only people who bought the category in a recent period. Use a screener that includes other categories so the topic is not obvious.
- Never show brand names before the unaided question. That includes in the screener or the introduction.
- Rotate the aided list so the order does not favour the first names.
The same logic is in the audience guide, which explains screeners without giving the answer away.
A Question Bank for D2C Brands
Illustrative. Swap the category, and the brand list should come from your competitor set.
| # | Block | Question | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Screener | Which of these have you bought in the last 3 months? (category list with others) | Multi-select |
| 2 | Unaided | Which brands of [category] can you think of? List as many as you like | Open text |
| 3 | Top of mind | Which one comes to mind first? | Open text |
| 4 | Aided | Which of these brands have you heard of? (your brand, competitors, 1 or 2 decoys) | Multi-select, rotated |
| 5 | Source | Where did you first see or hear about [brand]? | Multi-select |
| 6 | Consideration | Which of these would you consider buying next time? | Multi-select |
| 7 | Trial | Which have you bought, and which in the last month? | Grid |
| 8 | Image | Which brand do you associate with each of these statements? | Grid |
| 9 | Preference | If all were available, which would you choose? | Single choice |
| 10 | Profile | City, age band, gender | Single choice |
Sample Size When Awareness Is Low
A young brand may have awareness near 5% to 10%. The margin of error for a share near that level is smaller than at 50%, but it is large relative to the share. The figures are arithmetic for a simple random sample, so they are the best case for a panel.
| Responses | At 5% awareness | At 10% awareness | At 30% awareness |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | ±4.3 points | ±5.9 points | ±9.0 points |
| 400 | ±2.1 points | ±2.9 points | ±4.5 points |
| 1,000 | ±1.4 points | ±1.9 points | ±2.8 points |
At 5% awareness, 100 responses give a range from roughly 1% to 9%. That cannot show a two-point change. Use 400 or more for a baseline and keep the same sample design every wave. See brand tracking.
Measuring Brand Equity and Comparing With Competitors
Brand equity has no single standard formula. Firms publish their own models, so choose a small set of measures and keep them fixed. A practical set is the funnel above, image associations (question 8), preference when all brands are available, and price tolerance from a pricing study.
To compare with competitors, ask every question about the same three to five brands and report them side by side. Do not ask about brands the respondent has never heard of beyond the aided list. To see whether a campaign moved the numbers, use a brand lift study with a control group.
Running This Study on Hercules
If your job is a brand awareness survey of category buyers in India, this is the baseline at list price. Screened-out people do not count towards a response bundle.
| Step | Plan | Responses | Price per response | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test the questionnaire | Free | 30 | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Small pilot | Plus | 100 | ₹150 | ₹15,000 |
| Main study | Pro | 400 | ₹120 | ₹48,000 |
Pro is sold in bundles of 400 to 1,000 responses and costs 20% less per response than Plus. Enterprise plans come with a dedicated research team and are priced on request.
The SuperJ network has a 25M+ consumer footprint. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read /panel-methodology and pricing.
The limit: the app reaches smartphone users only, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between aided and unaided brand awareness?
Unaided awareness is the brands a person names with no list shown. Aided awareness is the brands they recognise from a list. Ask unaided first, or the list will contaminate the answer.
How do I measure awareness for a small D2C brand?
Sample category buyers in your target cities, ask unaided then aided with decoy brands, and use at least 400 responses for a baseline because awareness is low. Repeat with the same design each wave.
How do I measure brand equity?
There is no single formula. Combine funnel conversion, image associations, preference and price tolerance, and keep the same measures every wave.
What is a decoy brand in a survey?
A brand that does not exist, added to the aided list. People who say they know it are guessing, so it shows how much false recognition inflates your aided figure.
How many responses do I need for a brand awareness survey?
For a share near 10%, 400 responses give about ±2.9 points and 100 give about ±5.9 points in a simple random sample. Use more for brands with very low awareness.
