Three Choices, in This Order

Search for "types of market research" and you mostly find method lists: primary or secondary, qualitative or quantitative. Those describe how you collect data. They do not tell you which study to commission on Monday.

This guide sorts studies by the business question they answer. Choosing a study is three choices, in this order. First, the study type, which follows your decision. Second, the design, which is how respondents see the stimulus: one idea each, several in rotation, a ranked list. Third, the KPI, the named measure you report. The six tables below give the question, the KPI and the guide to read next for 22 study types. For method questions, see our research methodology guide.

How to Choose Between Study Types

Write the decision as a sentence before anything else: "We will launch, change or drop X depending on Y." If you cannot finish the sentence, you need an exploratory study first. If you can, the verb tells you the group.

  • Where do we stand? Brand and market studies.
  • What do we launch? Product and ad studies.
  • What do we charge? Price studies.
  • What do we fix? Customer experience studies.
  • Who do we target? Audience studies.
  • How do our people feel? Organisation studies.

Each study type then maps to a design. Pick the design with our research design chooser, which covers monadic, sequential monadic, MaxDiff, Kano and TURF.

Brand and Market Studies

Use these to see where the brand and the category stand. Most are descriptive: one linear questionnaire, or the same questionnaire repeated in waves.

StudyQuestion it answersKPI or instrumentGo deeper
Usage and attitude (U&A)Where does category growth come from: occasions, needs, barriers?Penetration, frequency, occasions, repertoire, share of requirementsU&A guide
Brand health and trackingWhere does the brand leak in the funnel against competitors?Unaided then aided awareness, consideration, trial, past-3-months use, brand used most often, NPSBrand tracking
Market sizing and white spaceWhere to play: size, share of wallet, white spacePenetration, frequency, spend, channel split, switchingConsumer market analysis
Shopper and path to purchaseWhere and how is the purchase decision won?Trigger, planning level, channel, in-store or in-app levers, switchingRetail research

Product and Ad Studies

Use these to choose what to launch or air. They need a discrete stimulus: a concept, a product, a pack, an ad or a feature list. That makes the design choice real.

Concept screening and testingGo, no-go or fix, for each ideaPurchase intent (5-point, top-2-box), uniqueness, relevance, believabilityConcept testing
Product testingIs the product ready, and which attributes to change?9-point overall liking, just-about-right scales with penalty analysis, paired preferenceNew product research
Packaging, design, logo and name testingWhich pack or name to launch?First-noticed share, shelf choice, communication, appealPackaging testing
Ad pre-testAir, fix or drop the creative?Brand linkage, persuasion, enjoyment, message takeout, distinctivenessAd testing
Ad and campaign trackingIs the campaign cutting through?Unaided ad awareness, ad recognition, branded recall, brand liftAd testing

Price Studies

StudyQuestion it answersKPI or instrumentGo deeper
Pricing researchWhat price or price range to launch at?Acceptable range, optimal price point, demand curve, revenue-optimal pricePricing research

Price studies use their own designs: Van Westendorp for a range, Gabor-Granger for a demand curve, and monadic price cells to compare single prices. For Van Westendorp and Gabor-Granger, the platform builds the survey and you compute the curve. Price also appears inside concept tests, so decide whether you need a separate study.

Customer Experience Studies

Use these with people who already buy from you. They are usually linear questionnaires with a fixed set of named measures.

StudyQuestion it answersKPI or instrumentGo deeper
Customer satisfaction (CSAT)What to fix first to raise satisfaction and loyalty?CSAT (top-2-box, 5-point), NPS, CES 2.0, driver satisfactionCSAT platforms
Customer experience (CX)Which journey stage destroys the most value?Relationship NPS, touchpoint satisfaction, CES, first-contact resolutionCX survey
Churn and exitWhy do customers leave, and which win-back offer works?Main reason for leaving, trigger, alternative used, return likelihoodChurn survey
Usability and UXWhich problems block task success?Single Ease Question per task, UMUX-Lite or SUS, issues foundUsability survey

For NPS, the formula is the share scoring 9 or 10 minus the share scoring 0 to 6 on a 0 to 10 recommend question. See NPS methodology. Usability here is self-reported: a survey does not time tasks.

Audience Studies

Use these to decide who to target and how to talk to them.

If you do not yet know the questions, run a few interviews first. Our jobs-to-be-done guide shows how to turn them into a survey.

Is the final concept strong enough to launch?Concept testPure monadic with a control
Which of 2 pack designs?Packaging testPaired comparison early, pure monadic for the final
Should this ad air?Ad pre-testPure monadic with a control
Did the campaign land?Ad trackingWaves, exposed against unexposed
Which of 20 features first?Feature prioritisationMaxDiff, then Kano on the top 15 or fewer
What price?Pricing researchVan Westendorp for range, Gabor-Granger on a short price ladder, then price cells
Why are customers leaving?Churn studyLinear, among lapsed customers

How do staff feel?eNPSLinear, anonymous

Designs are explained in the research design chooser. Match sample size to the cells you need: a pure monadic test with 3 cells needs 3 times the respondents of one cell.

India Notes for Any Study Type

  • Classes and cities. Use NCCS classes (A1 to C1), city tier and region. Western income bands do not fit Indian households. See our tier 2 and tier 3 guide.
  • Scales. Yes-saying is a known risk, so prefer fully labelled scales and forced choice over long agree-disagree grids.
  • Length. Aim for 8 to 12 minutes on a smartphone, with short screens and grids of 5 to 7 rows at most.
  • Language. Use short, plain sentences and test the translation. See the multilingual survey guide.
  • Sample. Decide quotas before fieldwork. See sampling methods.

Running This Study on Hercules

If your job is a consumer survey in India, our survey builder has playbooks for all 22 study types above. It picks the design from your stimuli and names the KPI instrument, so you do not invent a home-made variant. This is the cost of a typical study at list price.

StepPlanResponsesPrice per responseCost
Test the questionnaireFree30₹0₹0
Small pilotPlus100₹150₹15,000
Main studyPro400₹120₹48,000

Pro is sold in bundles of 400 to 1,000 responses and costs 20% less per response than Plus. Enterprise plans come with a dedicated research team and are priced on request.

Respondents come from the SuperJ app, which has a 25M+ consumer footprint. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and what you can reach depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, then take part through a zero-knowledge proof. You can target by city tier, age, gender (male or female) and NCCS class. Surveys run in 8+ Indian languages, and speeders, straight-liners and inconsistent answers are removed before analysis (panel methodology). The panel is in India only and app-based, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main types of market research studies?

By business question: brand and market studies, product and ad studies, price studies, customer experience studies, audience studies and employee studies. By method: qualitative or quantitative, primary or secondary. Pick the business question first, then the method.

How do I decide which market research study I need?

Write the decision as a sentence: we will launch, change or drop X depending on Y. The verb points to the group. Launch points to product and ad studies, charge to price studies, fix to customer experience studies.

What is the difference between a study type and a research design?

The study type is the business question, such as concept testing. The design is how respondents experience the stimulus, such as monadic or sequential monadic. One study type can use several designs.

Which study should I run before launching a new product?

Usually a concept test for the idea, a product test once a prototype exists, a packaging test for the pack, and a pricing study for the price. Feature prioritisation helps if the idea has many possible features.

What is the difference between brand tracking and ad tracking?

Brand tracking measures the whole funnel for the brand, from awareness to use, over time. Ad tracking measures whether a campaign is noticed and linked to the brand. The two share some measures, such as awareness, but answer different decisions.

Which KPIs go with which study?

Concept tests use purchase intent, uniqueness and relevance. Customer studies use CSAT, NPS and CES. Brand studies use awareness, consideration and trial. Employee studies use eNPS. Name the instrument and keep wording fixed across waves.

Can one survey cover more than one study type?

Yes, as a mixed-methodology study with one module per objective. Keep the total to about 8 to 12 minutes on a phone. If the modules need different respondents or designs, run separate studies.
