Travel and Hospitality Consumer Research in India: Reaching the Right Travellers
How to survey leisure and business travellers, hotel guests and travel-app users in India: screeners, KPIs, sample sizes, costs and checks for a panel.
In shortYes, Hercules Works can reach Indian travellers, because SuperJ members are general consumers. Target by city, age, gender and NCCS, then use a screener on trips taken, trip purpose and booking channel to find leisure, business, domestic or international travellers. Frequent business and international travellers are low-incidence, so ask for a feasibility count first. The panel is smartphone users in India only.

A traveller is defined by a trip, not by a person
The same person is a leisure traveller in December and a business traveller in March. So a travel study screens on trips taken in a recent window, the purpose of each trip, and how the booking was made. This guide gives the screener, the KPIs (booking funnel, price sensitivity, NPS and cancellation reasons), a worked sample and cost example, and the questions to ask any panel provider.
How a Study Reaches Travellers
SuperJ members are general Indian consumers, so people who travel are among them. No traveller field is documented, so ask which behavioural segments exist and always screen.
Targeting. Select the cities where your travellers live, which is not where they travel. The fields are set out in how audience targeting works and the guide to surveying any audience.
Cells. The screener sorts people into leisure, business, domestic and international groups. Use in-survey over-quota routing to close a cell when it fills, so frequent travellers do not crowd out occasional ones. Ask the team which screener answers can carry a quota.
Screener Questions for Travel Studies
Use a recall window of 12 months. Shorter windows cut incidence for business and international trips.
| # | Question | Answer options | Qualifying rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | In the last 12 months, which trips did you take? | Domestic leisure; domestic business; international leisure; international business; pilgrimage; none | Pick the trip types you need. Screen out "none" |
| 2 | How many trips in total? | 1; 2 to 3; 4 to 6; 7 or more | 4 or more for a frequent-traveller cell |
| 3 | Who booked your last trip? | I did; someone in my family; my employer's travel desk | "I did" for booking-funnel and price studies |
| 4 | Where did you book it? | Airline site or app; travel app; hotel's own site or app; travel agent; walk-in | Not a screen-out. Use as a channel quota |
| 5 | Where did you stay? | Hotel; homestay or rental; with relatives; guesthouse or dharamshala | Hotel or rental for a stay study |
| 6 | Did you cancel or change any booking in the last 12 months? | Yes; no | Yes for the cancellation module |
| 7 | Who travelled with you on the last trip? | Alone; partner; family with children; friends or colleagues | Quota variable |
| 8 | Is your own job in travel, hotels, airlines or research? | Yes; no | Screen out "yes" |
Question 3 matters most for business travel. If an employer's desk books everything, the traveller cannot answer price or channel questions, so a screen-out is right. Ask for the trip purpose before the booking channel, so the two answers are not anchored on each other.
KPIs and Questions That Matter for Travel
| KPI | How to ask it | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Booking funnel | For the last trip: first search, sites compared, days between first search and booking, what stopped you | Drop-off by stage and by channel. Self-reported, so treat it as a map, not a log |
| Price sensitivity | Per-night or fare price questions in a Van Westendorp or Gabor-Granger design | An acceptable range, not a demand forecast |
| NPS | "How likely are you to recommend this app or stay?" 0 to 10 | Score per brand and per segment. See NPS methodology |
| Cancellation reasons | Multi-select, then "which was the main one?" | Plan changed, price found elsewhere, refund terms, work trip dropped. Rank the main reason |
| Attribute importance | MaxDiff over 10 to 12 features: free cancellation, breakfast, reviews, loyalty points | Utilities show trade-offs that a rating grid hides |
| Trip frequency and lead time | Trips per year; days booked ahead | Segment on these before you read anything else |
For one real use of a smartphone audience in this category, read the hotel booking app ad pre-test. It was a directional 100-person test of a video ad, so read it as a method example, not a market figure. For churn and satisfaction work, see the guides on customer experience and churn.
India Facts a Travel Researcher Needs
These come from the Ministry of Tourism's India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, which we opened.
Domestic trips are the bulk. The compendium reports 2,948.19 million domestic tourist visits in 2024, up 17.51% from 2,508.82 million in 2023. Uttar Pradesh (646.81 million) and Tamil Nadu (306.84 million) were the top two states by visits. These are visits to states, not people. Do not read them as a count of travellers.
Outbound is smaller but growing. Indian nationals made 30.89 million departures in 2024, 10.79% above 2023. By purpose, 42.52% were leisure, 34.69% were visits related to the Indian diaspora, 14.92% business and professional, and 3.99% pilgrimage. The United Arab Emirates was the leading destination, and 98.00% departed by air. Business was under a sixth of departures, so expect international business travellers to be hard to fill. Departures are trips, not people.
Inbound is a different study. Foreign tourist arrivals were 99.52 lakh in 2024 (Ministry of Tourism, PIB, 11 December 2025). Our panel is Indian residents on a smartphone app, so it cannot survey foreign visitors.
Cancellation and refunds are regulated. The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement on refunds (Section 3, Series M, Part II) says airlines must complete a refund within 21 working days for tickets bought through a travel agent or portal. It also describes a 48-hour look-in option for changes. That copy is dated 2008 and marked February 2019, so check the current version before you quote terms in a questionnaire.
Worked Example: Sample Size, Incidence and Cost
Illustrative study: booking-channel and price sensitivity among travellers who book their own trips. You want 400 completes: 280 leisure travellers and 120 frequent business travellers.
Precision. At 95% confidence and a 50% result, 1.96 × √(0.25 ÷ 280) = 5.9 points for leisure, and 1.96 × √(0.25 ÷ 120) = 8.9 points for business. The business cell is too small to compare finely, which is a trade-off you should decide on purpose.
Incidence. The term is defined in the audience hub guide. These rates are assumptions for the sums, not panel data.
| Group | Completes | Assumed incidence | People who must enter the screener |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic leisure, books own trips (if screened alone) | 280 | 35% | 280 ÷ 0.35 = 800 |
| Frequent business, books own trips (if screened alone) | 120 | 8% | 120 ÷ 0.08 = 1,500 |
| One screener stream feeding both cells | 400 | n/a | The rarer cell sets the total: 1,500 |
Both cells fill from the same stream. Of 1,500 people entering, about 1,500 × 0.35 = 525 would qualify as leisure, above the 280 needed, so you do not add the two counts. The rare group drives the field effort. If the business cell is too hard to fill, widen the window or the age band before you cut the sample. Ask for the feasibility count for the business cell first.
What to Ask Any Panel Provider About Travel Audiences
-
Business-traveller feasibility. "How many frequent business travellers who book their own trips, in [cities]? Over what recall window?"
-
Trip-based confirmation. "Is traveller status a screener answer on trips in the last 12 months, or an old profile tag?"
-
Booking-desk exclusion. "Can the survey screen out people whose employer's desk books everything?"
-
International cell. "How do you handle international business travellers if the cell will not fill?"
-
Channel cells. "Which screener answers, such as booking channel, can carry a quota?"
-
Refund and cancellation wording. "Do you review questionnaire wording on refund terms against current airline rules?"
Generic checks are in verified survey respondents.
Honest Limits
People who book only through agents or walk-ins are under-represented, because the panel is smartphone users. The panel is India only, so it cannot reach foreign tourists or Indians who live abroad. Frequent business and international travellers may be slow to fill. Self-reported funnel steps and cancellation reasons are memory, not booking logs, and domestic visit counts from the Ministry are visits, not people, so do not use them as population totals for weighting.

Frequently asked questions
How do I survey people who travel for leisure in India?
Target your cities, then screen on trips taken in the last 12 months and the purpose of each. Qualify domestic leisure travellers and set quotas by age and city. Ask for a feasibility count for your exact audience.
Can I reach business travellers or frequent flyers?
Through a screener, not a profile field. Ask for trips by purpose and the number of trips. Frequent business travellers are low-incidence, so plan for more people entering the screener. Screened-out people do not count towards a bundle. Ask for feasibility first.
Can I survey hotel guests or travel-app users?
Yes. Ask where the last trip was booked and where the person stayed, and qualify by channel or stay type. We do not run surveys inside a specific hotel or app, so these are self-reported answers from panel members.
What KPIs should a travel study measure?
Booking funnel drop-off, price sensitivity, NPS, cancellation reasons, attribute importance and booking lead time. Use MaxDiff for features and a Van Westendorp or Gabor-Granger design for price.
How do I reach domestic versus international travellers?
Use one screener question listing domestic and international trips by purpose. International business travellers are the hardest to fill, so check feasibility early.
What does a travel survey cost in India?
At list price, Plus is ₹150 per response from 100 responses, and Pro is ₹120 per response in bundles of 400 to 1,000. 400 responses on Pro is ₹48,000.
Can the panel reach foreign tourists?
No. The panel is Indian residents using a smartphone app, India only. Foreign tourist arrivals need a different sampling method.
