National Omnibus vs Online Panel in India: Which One Answers Your Question

National omnibus or online panel in India? When a representative sample is needed, what an app-based panel can and cannot show, and a decision table.

In shortUse a national omnibus when you need a figure that represents all Indian adults, and an online panel when you need a targeted audience, a screener or a concept test. An omnibus adds your questions to a shared survey. YouGov's India page states a nationally representative sample of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 adults aged 18+, with weekly launches and results in 3 working days. An app-based panel reaches smartphone users and is not a national sample.

Two Tools for Two Questions

An omnibus and an online panel are not rivals. They answer different questions. If you need to say "X% of Indian adults believe...", you need a sample designed to represent them. If you need to know how category buyers in four cities react to a concept, you need a panel you can target and screen.

This guide explains the difference and gives a decision table. The statements about YouGov are from its India National Omnibus page, read on 16 October 2026; the page is undated, and we did not use its prices because the table was unclear. The statements about panels cite the AAPOR report on online panels.

What Each One Is

National omnibusOnline panel (app-based)
What it isA shared survey that several clients add questions toA pool of members you target and invite
Best forA headline number for Indian adultsA defined audience, a screener, a concept or ad test
AudienceStated as a nationally representative sample of Indian adults aged 18+ (YouGov)Smartphone users in the cities and age bands you choose
QuestionsFew, added to a fixed surveyYour own questionnaire, any length that suits the study
LimitLittle room for screeners or long stimulusNot a national sample

YouGov's page states sample options of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 Indian adults aged 18+, surveys that launch every Tuesday and results 3 working days from launch. It does not state how respondents are recruited or the mode, so ask the vendor before relying on it.

What the Research Says About Opt-In Panels

The AAPOR report on online panels states that "Most online panels are not constructed using probability-based recruitment" and that nonprobability online panels have inherent and significant coverage error. It was written in 2010 about the United States, so check how far it applies today. The practical lesson is the same: an opt-in panel is good for reaching a defined audience and testing ideas, and weaker for estimating a population figure.

Report panel results as the views of the respondents, name the cities and age bands, and avoid "all Indians". See sampling methods and survey bias.

When Hercules Works Is Not the Right Choice

If your finding will be published as a national estimate, use a method that publishes its sampling frame and weights. Our panel is app-based and not a probability sample. Read the policy opinion survey guide for how to report panel results honestly.

The SuperJ network has a 25M+ consumer footprint. The survey-eligible panel is a subset, and availability depends on your targeting. Members complete Aadhaar-based KYC once, and each study receives a zero-knowledge proof of verification. Surveys run in as many Indian languages as the study needs. Quality checks flag speeders, straight-lining and inconsistent answers. Read /panel-methodology and pricing.

The limit: the app reaches smartphone users only, so offline households need face-to-face fieldwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is an omnibus survey?

A shared survey in which several clients add questions and pay per question or sample. It is used for quick, representative figures on a small number of questions.

Is an online panel representative of India?

No. An app-based panel reaches smartphone users in the cities you target. Use it for defined audiences and tests, and describe results as the views of those respondents.

When do I need a representative sample?

When you will publish or act on a figure for all adults, such as national support for a policy. Otherwise a targeted panel is usually enough.

What does YouGov's India omnibus offer?

Its page states a nationally representative sample of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 Indian adults aged 18+, weekly launches and results in 3 working days. The page is undated, so confirm with the vendor.

Can I combine an omnibus and a panel?

Yes. Use the omnibus for the headline number and the panel for depth, and label each result with its source.
